mtvu is filled with morons.

i know its long, but good lord, it had to be said.
below are what you may need to understand this post:
"crank dat" by soulja boy
"summer of 98" by the secret handshake
mtvu's "the freshmen"
watch the 2 videos, and then watch the freshmen part 2 and 5. the soulja boy critique starts after about 50 seconds into part 2. the secret handshake critique is on part 5.

intro:
at mtvu, they have a music video critiquing segment entitled "the freshmen" where they take 4 kids who know nothing about music, stick them in a room and have them - you guessed it - talk about music! the most recent update of this contains a few choice music videos, two of them being "crank dat" by soulja boy and "summer of 98" by the secret handshake.

crank dat:
this song is crap squared. cubed. to the tenth, hundredth, thousandth power. the man wears clothes large enough to fit an elephant - nay, the sun. and i understand that wearing clothes that can fit 3 of you in it is the style these days, but this guy takes it to the next level, and its not cool. this isnt the only reason i hate this song (if it were, i would not have good critiquing skills, because what i just stated has nothing to do with the actual song). i hate it because its the same formulaic rap song as every other one out there. throw in the same dance with one or 2 extra moves, a catchy phrase or saying (you!), and the same 4/4 time beat looped over and over behind some very bad rap lyrics. this song is close to 3 and a half minutes long, and only about 50 seconds of that is rapping, and during those 50 seconds, a majority of his rap is him telling the listener his rap handle and "why hes hot".

summer of 98:
ive been listening to the secret handshake since it came out. long before anyone knew about it, long before getting big was ever thought of, and long long before a music video. you can take this as biased or fair if youd like, but i thought id go ahead and put that out. this is an actual song. it has a message, and sure, its the simple verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, but did that ever stop a song from being good? the video and the song tell a story. and i know there isnt nearly as much praise here as there is attacking on soulja boy, but it was just that horrible. its like comparing crap and heaven. you see crap, and you can describe it in so many words. vile, disgusting, smelly, horrid, everything awful, etc. but heaven is just... glorious. not that im being so bold as to compare the secret handshake to heaven, but you know what i mean, right?

the freshmen:
they said the secret handshake would never get anywhere. they also said soulja boy was really creative. they pretty much refused to critique the secret handshake because of how much they hated it. but after listening to soulja boy, they couldnt help but praise it.
i dont understand it.
